What are You Noticing?

It’s a new calendar year. The anticipation for new beginnings, resets, and recommitments that are associated with a new year feel different in 2021. At least in my part of the world.

We are still in a raging global pandemic; despite new vaccines being rolled out, all those who are intended to receive them first are not; upheaval in US government; food insecurity for millions in the richest country in the world; and the list goes on.

This weighs on us whether we acknowledge the details or not.

When I feel the weight, I ask myself this question: What else is also true?

I notice when I slow down my racing mind, ask myself what else is also true, I can see things from a different perspective. I am able to say what is true in that moment. The feeling of the weight of circumstances out of my control shifts. Overwhelm slips away. I sometimes say things out loud to be able to hear my thoughts outside myself; things like “I am safe. I am warm. The sun is shining. There are birds flitting around in the yard.”

This practice may sound simplistic. It is. Saying what is also true helps shift the focus of weightiness to be able to see a lighter co-existing reality. It’s like turning your head to the other side to view what is also in the room.

Why am I sharing this? I know I am not the only one who has felt discouraged that the beginning of 2021 has not magically reset our lives to “normal”. The collective New Year enthusiasm is deflated. We need new perspectives, new practices.

We need reminding of what is also True: God is abiding with us. He has pitched His tent in your neighborhood. He’s not going anywhere. He invites you for coffee (or tea) daily. Do you make time?

Yes you have a full to do list. Yes you have demands on your time. Yes you have a lot of hats to wear. Yes life can feel overwhelming on a daily basis.

Jesus invites you to Come to Him.

Notice what a gentle reminder of Truth can do for your soul, your perspective.

Practice noticing. Practice asking what is also true.

These are free gifts you can give yourself.

What are you noticing?
